New Year, New Word

As I do every year in that week between the holidays to new year I start to review my journals and ponder new methods and goals for the new year. This year I am taking on a new practice, which is to pick a word to be your touchstone for the year instead of making a resolution. This “north star” word can be a value you want to dive deeper into, or something you want to live by, a feeling-state you want to embrace or even a sort of goal. It is used as your north star to guide your work for the next year.

To come up with my word I made a brainstorm list in my journal. Here are some that I came up with

Simplify, Insight, Clarity, Serendipity, Sacred, Determination, Less, Growth, Cozy, Reflect, Affluent, Persistence, Resistance, Serenity, Guided, Vibrant, and so on.

I put this north star word question to some of my current students and they chose “simplicity” and “calm” for their words. They explained that their lives were busy and overwhelming and this was the kind of focus they needed.

After some deep thinking and some pendulum dowsing I came up with my north star word: Trust. After I came up with it affirmations around it just poured out of me.

I trust myself

I trust that I am always enough

I trust my guidance from spirit

I trust my partners

I trust my abilities to do, be, and have everything I require

I trust that things I can’t control will eventually work themselves out.

… and so on.

Seek out your own north star word and see how it changes your perspective on everything.
